Its observation deck provides 360-degree views of the city and bay, including the Golden Gate and Bay bridges. With stunning views of the city, the murals inside the tower’s base tell a story of life in California during the Depression. Step back in time and experience the legendary island that has been a civil war fort, a military prison and one of the most famous federal penitentiaries in U.S. history. Several programs and presentations are offered only at night. The road and walkways are steep. You will walk ¼ of a mile just from the dock to the cellhouse with an elevation change of 130 feet. For those with mobility issue they do offer support. A complete guided tour is about 2 ½ hours.
