Looking Back at 2020: Lessons From an Unforgettable Year

Entering 2020 With Hope and Expectations

At the beginning of 2020, there was so much promise ahead. The year 2020 had such a nice sound to it. TWENTY-TWENTY. It was a year that sounded futuristic back in the 60s and 70s, and many of us entered it with new goals, resolutions, hopes, and expectations.

None of us could have known how dramatically the year would change.

When 2020 Took an Unexpected Turn

What began as an ordinary new year quickly became something none of us expected. By March, daily life had changed dramatically as the COVID-19 pandemic affected communities across the country.

St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, family gatherings, business meetings, travel, and countless other everyday activities suddenly looked very different. Many people began working from home, while others faced uncertainty about their jobs, businesses, and what would happen next.

It was a period filled with questions and uncertainty. We didn’t know how long the disruption would last or when life would begin to feel familiar again.

The New Normal of Life at Home

During that time, we learned how quickly everyday routines could change.

We became more comfortable with Zoom and other online meeting tools. Parents took on new challenges as they helped with homeschooling. Many of us spent more time at home than we ever expected, found new ways to stay connected, and discovered just how much of our daily lives depended on routines we had previously taken for granted.

We also became experts at finding ways to stay entertained, whether that meant watching YouTube videos, exploring TikTok, keeping up with friends on social media, or simply finding something new to do at home.

Finding the Silver Linings in 2020

Even during such a difficult year, there were some unexpected positives.

For many people, 2020 meant spending more time with family, learning to cook, reading books, discovering new hobbies, and becoming more comfortable with working from home.

It also gave many of us an opportunity to slow down and appreciate things that had previously seemed ordinary: sharing a meal with family, meeting a friend, attending an event, or simply being able to travel without giving it a second thought.

Looking Back on What We Learned

Looking back, 2020 was a reminder of how quickly circumstances can change.

It showed us the importance of flexibility, staying connected, adapting to new situations, and appreciating the everyday experiences that can easily be overlooked when life moves quickly.

The year certainly wasn’t what anyone expected, but it left behind lessons that many of us continue to carry with us.

Moving Forward

Today, 2020 is a chapter in the past, but it remains an important part of our recent history. The experience changed how many of us think about work, travel, family, technology, and the value of simply being together.

So, while we can still say good riddance to 2020, we can also look back with appreciation for the lessons it taught us and the resilience people showed during an incredibly challenging time.

Here’s to appreciating where we’ve been, making the most of where we are, and looking forward to what comes next.
