What to Do When You’re Stuck at the Airport
Most of us have experienced an unexpected flight delay or, worse, a cancellation. You can spend the time being frustrated, or you can make the most of the unexpected downtime by getting some work done, relaxing, or taking care of things you normally don’t have time for.
Here are a few ways to make the most of your time at the airport.
Getting Business Done
If you don’t already have access through a credit card, airline loyalty program, or other membership, some airport lounges offer day passes for a fee. Depending on the lounge, you may have access to Wi-Fi, workspaces, charging stations, food, and quieter areas where you can get work done.
Prioritize your most important tasks first. Once those are finished, use the extra time to respond to emails, make phone calls, organize your schedule, or take care of administrative tasks you’ve been putting off.
If you need to discuss confidential business information, look for a quieter or more private area rather than assuming a shared lounge space is private.
Just Relax
Not every airport delay needs to become a work session. If you’ve already taken care of your priorities, use the time to relax.
Depending on the airport, you may find lounges, private rest areas, quiet spaces, or other amenities where you can read, watch a movie, catch up on a podcast, or simply take a break. Some airport lounges and rest facilities may require a separate fee or membership, so check the current access options before you travel.
Plan for a Delay
While we don’t usually plan for a lengthy delay, it helps to be prepared for one. Bring a portable charger or power bank so you’re not dependent on finding an available outlet, and make sure your important devices are charged before leaving for the airport.
It’s also a good idea to keep important travel documents and files accessible offline. If you need access to work documents during a delay, having copies available on your device or through secure cloud storage can save time when you don’t have a reliable connection.
Other Ways to Kill Time
Perhaps your delay is much longer than expected and you’ve already finished your work. There are plenty of ways to make the extra time more enjoyable.
Take a walk around the terminal, listen to a podcast, read a book, catch up with a friend or family member, or explore the shops and restaurants available at the airport. Some airports also offer fitness areas, yoga rooms, art exhibits, or other amenities.
If you’re traveling for business, a delay can also be a good opportunity to take care of personal tasks that often get pushed aside. Pay a bill, organize your calendar, plan your next trip, or simply take some time to recharge.
Enjoy the Experience
Instead of spending the entire delay watching the clock, take the opportunity to explore the airport. You may discover a restaurant, shop, lounge, or other amenity you wouldn’t normally have time to visit.
Depending on the airport and length of your delay, there may even be opportunities to leave the terminal and explore the surrounding area. Just make sure you have enough time to return, clear security, and make your new departure time.
Take advantage of the unexpected downtime and get caught up on the things that matter. Being prepared for delays can make an inconvenient situation much easier to manage.
